An eastern Ohio contractor has been cited for serious worker safety violations at an I-75 bridge project in Lucas County last fall and been told to pay a fine of $193,200.

APBN Inc., of Campbell, Ohio, was cited for 13 violations of fall protection and water safety procedures for workers sandblasting and painting I-75 bridge more than 40 feet above the over the Maumee River, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday.

“There is no excuse for failing to provide protection for employees facing fall and water hazards,” Jule Hove, OSHA area director in Toledo, said in a statement.

The agency’s inspection was in October, but the citations were sent to the company this month and released publicly Wednesday.

The company was issued three willful citations, the most serious type of violation, for allowing workers to be exposed to a 40 to 50 foot fall while climbing on and off the abutment walls to get to two suspended scaffold platforms on the north and south side of the DiSalle Bridge, for not ensuring workers wore fall protection gear, for not having a boat and life jackets in case of a worker fall, and other matters.

It also was cited for 10 other violations and was placed on the agency’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program.
