Three Saskatchewan contractors have been fined by Labour Relations and Workplace Safety in connection with rules forcing firms to help protect workers from falls.

Henfrey Builders was fined $840 in June in Regina Provincial Court for failing to ensure workers use fall protection.

Top Line Construction pleaded guilty to a pair of charges and fined $1,200 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in Moose Jaw Provincial Court for failing to ensure workers were using fallprotection equipment and protective headwear.

And Matthew Cumming, doing business as Montana's Contracting, pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court earlier this month to one charge for failing to ensure a worker used fall-protection equipment. The firm was fined $2,800 after a worker was injured after he fell from a roof that was being shingled in February 2010.

Injuries caused by falls represent almost 13 per cent of all construction injuries.

The ministry conducts about 4,500 worksite inspections a year to enforce legislation.
