Federal regulators have fined four northwest Ohio construction contractors and a Minnesota firm over safety violations found during inspections of work sites in the area.

In all, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration doled out fines totaling $126,760.

Salgau Roofing Inc., 301 Burger St., was fined $33,880 for four violations. OSHA labeled two citations as "serious," one as "willful," and one as "repeat serious." The willful violation was for not using guardrail systems, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems for employees working on a second-story roof in Perrysburg. The serious violations were for failure to train employees on the proper use of fall prevention systems. The repeat violation was for improper ladder placements.

Jason Westhoven and Associates, a general contractor based in Napoleon, was fined $33,660 for six "serious" violations and two "repeat serious" violations at a work site in Napoleon.

Violations included employees who were using power tools not wearing safety glasses, employees not being protected from fall hazards while on a scaffolding cleaning gutters, and employees working on the ground not wearing hard hats.

J.B. & Co., a Tiffin company, was fined $20,020 for two "serious" violations and one "repeat serious." OSHA said employees did not use any fall protection measures while working on a three-story apartment building in Bowling Green, and improperly placed ladders. The repeat violation was for employees not using fall protections while working on a low-slope roof.

Fred's Roofing & Home Improvement, 1478 Schuyler Rd., was fined $21,000 for 13 "serious" violations at a job site in Ottawa Hills that included removal of asbestos shingles.

Violations included a lack of proper respirators, no "competent" supervisor for asbestos work, and not labeling a trash bin as containing hazardous material.

Property Construction LLC, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., was fined $18,200 for one "serious" violation and one "willful" violation at a work site in Findlay. Both violations related to employees not being properly protected from falls while working on a roof.

The businesses have 15 days to comply with the finding or to contest them.
